Closed Sessions of the House of Representatives

The House of Representatives may hold closed or secret sessions to discuss business confidentially. Since the War of 1812, the House has held six such session.

Secret House Sessions

Date Reason
27 December 1825 To receive message from the President regarding Indian tribes
27 May 1830 To receive message from the President regarding trade bill between US and Britain
20 June 1979 Discussion regarding Panama Canal Act of 1979
25 February 1980 Discussion regarding Cuban and other Communist-block countries involvement in Nicaragua
19 July 1983 Discussion regarding U.S. support for paramilitary operations in Nicaragua
14 March 2008 Discussion regarding FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) and telecommunication firm immunity
